Description: This is a wonderful and striking boxed mirror from early 19th century Qajar era. The front doors to mirror depicts polo players playing the game of polo with the rest of the object covered on all sides and front and back with the finest khatamkari inlay with individual tiles that border on the microscopic. They are arranged in various borders of geometric and star designs very much to the Islamic taste. Khatamkari work involves bundles of triangular shaped rods being arranged together in patterns and glued. These are glued to other bundles and then finely sliced horizontally to provide discs of mosaic-like veneer which are then laid down with others, glued and pressed onto a surface. Materials used include rods of redwood from the jujube tree, rosewood, ebony, teakwood, brass, ivory and camel bone rods which are bleached and then cured in vats with copper filings for four to six months to stain them green. This accounts for the green hue of many of the mosaics in this piece. Dimensions: The box stands 13 inches in height and the width is 9 inches. Condition Report: The item is in overall good condition for its age with some loss to paint and inlay and the two door seems to be replaced or added at a later time. Shipping is FREE within the U.S.
